Today's Grauniad reports:

"Beckham was an anecdote in the elections," Laporta declared to some disbelief.

"People didn't vote for a possible signing of a player but rather a project. I did not promise to bring David Beckham to Barcelona, I said I had an agreement with Manchester United that contained conditions. One of those conditions was that I became president of the club. I have now done that.

"To make a strong football team it is very important we have players like Beckham. We will try to convince the player and, if we can't, we will look for another world star."
