Spots the difference

03 March 2007. Inspired by dot dot dots.

From Friday's edition of the Barcelona-based newspaper El Periódico: the local government in the suburb of Sant Martí has paid to have maps put up in the main park, with all the labelling in Braille. What they didn't pay for, however, was to have the Braille printed in relief.

It took three schoolkids, walking through the park one day, to notice the totally flat painted dots, and they mentioned it during their Social Studies class on disability. As homework, the teacher set the girls the task of doing something about it. And so the newspaper was contacted.

The park spokesman didn't seem too impressed at being called up by a journalist. "We could have opted not to print them in Braille at all," he said, indignantly. Apparently, new, more tactile signs are on order, to arrive "in the next few months". As any fule see.

All of which is a marvellous excuse, if one were needed, to link to The Daily Telegraph Project.
